What may be causing these wake ups? Babies sleep can be disturbed by many things – teething, illness, a change in routine, approaching their next developmental milestone etc.
Your baby may have been a great sleeper and has now started waking up at night, or maybe he has rarely slept through the night. Whatever the reason, it is worth initially going through a checklist to eliminate possible reasons – is your baby too hot or too cold? Is the room too bright or too dark? Is there too much external noise?
Once you are satisfied that none of these is the cause of the wakings, focus on making sure that he is getting enough sleep during the day. Don’t be tempted to cut the daytime naps in the hope that he will be more tired at night and sleep better. The opposite is true. The age-old saying “sleep breeds sleep” rings true.
