Be honest, do you find yourself scrolling through your phone, watching just one more episode, or getting caught in the cycle of reels—whether it’s cute dogs or must-have skincare items? Let’s face it, we all do it to some extent. And after a few nights of poor sleep, I realised this habit is probably a significant reason why.
It’s like a guilty pleasure. You know it’s a complete waste of time and you’ll gain nothing from it, but you just can’t stop.
This situation has become so widespread that it even has its own name: bedtime procrastination. And its impact reaches far beyond just a little less sleep.
When we delay bedtime, we disrupt our natural sleep patterns, leading to a cycle of poor sleep quality, increased frustration and moodiness, not to mention decreased productivity the next day. This disruption also affects our brain function, making us more prone to mistakes and less effective in our daily tasks. Over time, chronic bedtime procrastination can contribute to long-term health issues such as anxiety, weight gain, and cardiovascular problems, among others.
So, what can we do about it? Here are a few simple tips to help break the cycle:
- Set an alarm for yourself in the evening to remind yourself it is time to switch off
- Create a relaxing pre-sleep wind down that you look forward to: Develop habits that signal to your body that this is your time to wind down and relax. Taking a warm bath or shower, listening to music or podcast, reading and practicing relaxation exercises are all great elements of a relaxing wind down.
- Reflect on Your day: Spend a few minutes before bed contemplating and processing your day. Write things down will help you address any lingering and worrying thoughts you have that might keep you awake.
By making these small changes, you can stop the bedtime procrastination and significantly improve your sleep, which will have a positive impact, not just on your energy levels but your mood, focus and productivity.
Imagine what a few hours less of cute dog videos could do for you—a whole new lease on life awaits!
